Letter to Miss Dot at Five Months

Miss Dot,

You are five months old!  You are quite a crazy babe these days.  You definitely are really working hard to reach some of your physical milestones, which is both frustrating and thrilling to you!

This month you did a lot of things!  You had your first solid foods, went to your first swim lessons, constantly tried to stand while we hold you, rolled from your front to your back for the first time (then promptly forgot how to do that), and are trying hard to sit up on your own.

Your first food was mashed up bananas.  You weren't so sure about them at first, but you have slowly grown to like them after trying them several times.  You also tried avocado, peas, peaches, sweet potatoes, and carrots.  You're not so sure about solid foods yet, but you're definitely working on it.  You like to watch mama eat and will move your mouth in a chewing motion to mimic me.

Liking bananas better in the baby feeder you can chew on!

Avocados!

Peas!

You also have been going to baby swim lessons this month.  Mama and daddy take you and teach you how to kick, float, and even put you under the water sometimes so you can learn to hold your breath.  You don't really seem to mind any of it, but also aren't so sure what is even going on!  As for your baths, you LOVE them and go wild when you are in the bath.  You like to splash mama and daddy and kick like a maniac.

You also really love practicing standing.  You have very strong legs and love to push off of things.  You like to ride facing out in the carrier, so that you can see everything, but you often are shoving your hands into your mouth.  You like to chew on everything these days - but are not quite teething yet.  You've also started grabbing things a lot.  You love to grab mama's hair and pull or to grab her nose while she's holding you.  You grab everything you can!  You love singing and music and like to make lots of new noises.  It is clear that the English language is really interesting you and you are trying to make some of the sounds that mama and daddy make.  You LOVE the TV, which we try to only let you watch on occasion - Dave and Ava are your favorite.

Practicing Standing!

First time in the big girl stroller!

Riding Kala - Kala isn't so sure about this!

You love your owl chime!

You got a new play mat and play yard to roll around in.  Mama is hoping that it will be fun for you and your new nanny, Elvira, when mama goes back to work next month.  You seem to like it a lot so far.  Elvira, pronounced Elveeeera, will be taking care of you when mama goes back to work.  She is such a nice lady and you seem to really like her so far.  She will be keeping mama updated about what you're doing when you're with her, and mama and daddy will still be working from home several days a week, so that we can see you at lunch and be here earlier in the evenings.

Daddy's friend Kevin also visited and got to come to one of your swim lessons with you!

Also, this month, for your 5 month "birthday" your Grammie, Aunt Stephanie, and cousins Katie and Clara visited!  You had SO much fun with your cousins.  You really cracked up whenever they talked to you or played with you.  Katie mastered the peek-a-boo game with you, and Clara got lots of cuddles with you - she just wanted to hold you by herself!  They also got to feed you some bananas, which they loved.  Aunt Stephanie organized a photo shoot of you and your cousins in matching clothes!  It was pretty adorable.  Grammie also got to spend a lot of time with you.  She fed you, cuddled you, played with you on your play mat, and went to one of your swim lessons with you.  It's was lots of fun!

Watching Dave and Ava with Grammy!

You are still taking 3 naps a day, and nap for about 5 hours a day total.  You also sleep from about 7 pm until 7 am, and are still waking up to eat some at 2 am.  Mama is going to try to wean you off of that soon.  You weighed in at 14 lbs, 2 oz for your 5 month check up, and were 25 inches long.  Your head is a little flat in the back, and you might have to wear a baby helmet to make it nice and round.  Mama has been trying to keep you off of the flat spot, but you sleep so much!  You are drinking about 24-28 oz of formula a day!  Hungry girl!  You're already wearing 6 mos clothes and have outgrown any 3 month ones.

Next month we are taking you on a 10 day trip to California!  It will be really exciting!!

Love,
Mama
